Make a choice on demonstrating the data.

A DH project is basically categorized by its way to demonstrate information. Projects in humanities fields usually have a broader vision than those in literature and science. Researchers need to collect data either from the scientific record (Weather map etc.) or from old literature (old archives etc.). The information density during the process will be significantly large. Therefore, each digital humanity project should focus on one specific kind of information to demonstrate. For example, visualization catalog mainly compares and connects the data and presents them as an informative picture. Screenshot 2014-09-05 13.48.58It helps readers to understand relationships between but cannot give out any detailed information about “progressing” history.

Every DH project faces its own advantage and limitation. That’s why they are categorized. Different from “Visualization” type, which decorates and re-structures the data, “Archives” project type is trying to keep the most origin flavor of the data (documentation). After digitized original documents, the priceless archives can be safely copied, stored and read. In Lincoln at 200 website, we can see a clear photocopy of “10 Likely and Valuable Slaves at Auction,” to imagine the past. In Database of Indigenous People, we can see the original documents of the hand-written diary. The original data contains more useful information than we expect. From the hand writing, we can feel authors’ emotion. For example, the hand writing would be tidy and clean if the author takes the document seriously. Then, if we can look up some information about heraldry(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heraldry), we can find interesting information about the writer’s social status from the photocopy of his signature. The advantage of “Archive” can be summarized in one word “original”. They are the sculptures/ fossils of history. CaptureHowever, when the digital artifact is not clear or unreadable, it is useless. But all in all, making a digital copy is not harmful.

It is a big challenge to make a choice. “Visualization” and “Archive” face opposite direction when processing data, but either of them is a good topic in digital humanity. As I mentioned before, Information density in humanity’s research is really large. Looking up the useful information and selecting a good way to demonstrate should be the first and the most challenge as I am planning my humanities project.
